Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia is one thing that can appear as an endometriosis symptom. The word refers to a situation in which a person has a lower level of blood sugar than is standard. Aside from endometriosis, it has many other medical causes.

Symptoms

When hypoglycemia occurs in a patient, different things can show up as symptoms. Not every case of this issue will be the same in presentation. Keep in mind that there are other symptoms, and also that a person may have low blood sugar despite not displaying anything mentioned here.

A sensation of numbness and/or tingling may occur. The pupils may dilate. Perspiration may occur, and the patient can feel warm. Heart palpitations and a rapid heart rate are also possible. A patient with hypoglycemia may experience hunger. Nausea is another possibility, and the patient may vomit. Weakness may affect the person. Daydreaming may also happen. Amnesia is another symptom that might be displayed.

Causes

Hypoglycemia may be brought on for a number of reasons. One of these is endometriosis. In general, the common causes vary from one age group to another. Of course, in the case of endometriosis, the patient must also be female. For example, in young children, rotaviral gastroenteritis is a common reason. In young adults, Addison's disease is a reason that it may occur. This condition is also known as adrenal insufficiency.

Diagnosis

There are different ways in which hypoglycemia can be diagnosed. In some cases, a diagnostic fast may be used, but it is not proper for all circumstances. It may be expensive and undesirable from the point-of-view of the patient, but it is more useful in diagnosing (or ruling out) some of the more serious kinds of this condition. A glucose tolerance test may also be administered. The oral form involves a patient consuming a certain amount of glucose, and then going through a blood test after at least two hours to check the blood sugar level. In some instances that are not severe, experimenting with one's diet at home may also work.

Treatment

Cases of hypoglycemia are treated differently. In general, the first treatment administered is something to attempt to raise the patient's blood sugar level to the usual range. Aside from that, finding the medical reason for the hypoglycemia is another step. At that point, there may be some additional steps that can be taken to try to avoid recurrences of the situation. Methods used to try to prevent the situation from happening again vary depending on what caused it to take place.
